Bed Wetting: Spiritual Meaning, Causes & More!

Bedwetting, also called nocturnal enuresis, is when urine is released accidentally or unintentionally while sleeping.

Even though bedwetting isn’t a serious problem, it can be stressful for the kids and their families. When kids wet the bed, they may feel embarrassed or ashamed. They might not go to sleepovers because they are afraid they will wet the bed while away from home.

In the United States, about 5 million children wet their beds. It happens more often to younger kids—about 30% of kids under 7 and about 5% of kids 10 and older. Primary nocturnal enuresis affects about 2% to 3% of people over the age of 18. Boys are more likely to wet the bed than girls.

Bedwetting Causes

Most of the time, bedwetting is not caused by a single medical or mental problem. Instead, bedwetting is caused by several things, such as:

  • Constipation
  • Hormones
  • Small bladder capacity
  • Failure to wake up during the night
  • Psychological or emotional problems
  • Sexual abuse
  • Medical conditions

Spiritual and Emotional Reasons for Bedwetting

Bedwetting that does not go away may indicate repressed fear of one’s father (the authoritative figure) or of the person who plays the paternal role in the child’s life. The kid is not afraid of his father’s physical presence, but he constantly worries that he may disappoint him or fail to live up to his standards. When the infant is asleep, the child’s subconscious expresses these feelings, and the body, in response, may express them through the emission of pee. This child associates the shame of not being able to make his father happy with the shame of wetting his bed.

Spiritual Cure for Bedwetting

These kids need love and support, not coddling, but straightforward reinforcement. They are already harsh judges of themselves and need reassurance that they are loved no matter how well they do in school or how they behave (including the fact that they wet the bed). In order to help them feel more at ease and accept themselves, it’s important to put the spotlight on their best qualities. They need to be told that what they think their parents (mostly the fathers) want from them is not true.
