Anorexia: Spiritual Meaning, Causes & More!
Anorexia is an eating disorder that causes a person to have a body weight that is too low and a strong fear of gaining weight. People with anorexia put a lot of importance on controlling their weight and shape, going to great lengths that usually make their lives very difficult.
Anorexia is most common in teenage and young adult women, but it also happens in men and is becoming more common in kids and older people.
Symptoms of Anorexia
Some of the mental and emotional signs of anorexia are:

- Even if you’re underweight, you feel overweight or “fat.”
- Fear of some foods or groups of foods.
- Being very hard on yourself.
- Trying to make you feel like your low body weight and/or food restrictions are not a big deal.
- Having a strong need to take charge.
- Feeling angry and/or sad.
Physical Causes
All eating disorders, including anorexia, are complex. As a result, the precise origin of anorexia is unknown, but research points to a potential interaction between a number of genetic, psychological, and environmental factors, particularly sociocultural influences.
Genetics– According to research, 50-80% of eating disorder risk is inherited. People with eating disordered first-degree relatives (siblings or parents) are 10 times more likely to develop one.
Sociocultural– Cultures that idealize a certain body type, usually “slim,” might pressure people to meet unrealistic body standards. Popular culture and media portray thinness as popular, successful, beautiful, and happy.
Peer pressure is also especially powerful on children and teens. Anorexia can be caused by taunting, bullying, or ridicule based on looks or weight.
Emotional And Spiritual Reasons for Anorexia
When someone with anorexia refuses to eat, they are rejecting their own mother or their first blueprint of the feminine side. Food is a symbol of Mother Earth, which gives us life. By rejecting food, you are rejecting your own feminine self. Because you don’t want to be like your mother, your never-ending quest for perfection becomes an obsession. Since you have little control over your mother, losing weight becomes your aim.
Anorexics also deprive themselves of all emotions, including physical pleasure. You avoid unpleasant events that do not conform to your ideal of perfection.
Spiritual Reason And Cure For Anorexia
If you have anorexia, you should first assess your perception of your mother. Know in your heart that mom tried her best to raise and nurture you to the best of her abilities and knowledge at the time. Respect her and acknowledge her as a human being with the same anxieties and limits that we all do.
Your mother may have failed you in a variety of ways, but it is your perception of these events, rather than the events themselves, that is giving you anguish. You alone have the ability to alter this perception. Accept your mother and the way she raised you, and you will be able to welcome the woman within you and become whole again. Your appetite for eating and life will be revitalized.
It’s very important to realize that what you think of as perfect is unattainable. You have too high of hopes for yourself. Take the time to do things that make you happy, even if it makes you feel bad or wrong.
